The Poisoning of America. Rachel
Carson was right in her landmark book "The Silent Spring".
She was also wrong, as the demise of Americans (and other nations) is now underway -
not because of chemical pollution and climate change, but because of the life styles we
choose, or more correctly, we are programmed to choose by the advertisements we watch.
We are, willingly and with great enjoyment, poisoning ourselves. And because we do this
willingly, and enjoy doing it, we are not about to change our ways.
Fast food "restaurants" have substituted for home cooking, and cater to our
skewed taste buds, serving up fast fat with never a thought about the lack of nutrition on
the plate (or Styrofoam container!). We eat it because it tastes "good", not
because we need it to replenish our reserves of nutrition.
We drink buckets of Sodas, mostly sweetened with Aspartame to reduce the calorie load
in each bucket. This FDA approved sweetener is now being linked to a list of diseases as
long as your arm, including Gulf War Syndrome, MSL and Alzheimer's, to name a few. What
happened to water? Oh! I forgot! What comes out of the tap is spiked with chlorine, a
known carcinogen, and with fluoride, which has been found to break down the collagen in
the bones - the glue which gives them strength and flexibility.
We are blasted by "antacid" ads touting which is more powerful or lasts
longer when all have serious side effects like causing "leaking
bowel" and other as serious "side effects", perhaps Alzheimer's. There
is an alternative - eat those foods which don't give you "heart burn", and go on
a program to improve your digestive system - one which will benefit your health in the
long term. Antacids are a short term (and dangerous) fix. A shot of fresh lime or lemon
juice will provide better relief, for your stomach is looking for more acid, not less!
We cook most of our "at-home" meals using microwaves. A leading Physician has
commented that the simplest way to improve American's health would be to throw out these
microwave ovens. No! Its not the deadly radiation which can escape them, its what they do
to the molecular structure of the food. A microwaved potato does not taste like a potato,
neither does the stomach recognize it as conventional food. The long term effects of
eating this "altered" food are unknown.
Now we learn that beef will be irradiated to kill off bacteria, pathogens and insects!
If you are one of those brave individuals still eating beef, enjoy the free (and safe!)
additives, but don't believe that the meat will not be altered in this process, perhaps
producing all sorts of unknown substances. Surprise! It was the beef lobby who dreamed
this one up, because tainted hamburgers had made so many people sick that the FDA had to
publically recall tons of tainted beef. Bad publicity. No profit in that one.
I., for one, am not prepared to take part in this grand experiment. If I distrust some
food or drink, and there is an alternative, one used for centuries, I will enjoy the
alternative more. I am not prepared to wait 20 years to find out a product or process FDA
or USDA says today is safe, is, in fact, cancer causing or causes something as serious.
I enjoy living with an element of risk, but not the kind which will relegate me to an
early death statistic in America's love affair with trash food and trash advice on what to
put into my body. Nor will I whine for used body parts when I have exhausted mine - I have
a long term commitment to keep them with me till I die!
